Alex Ferguson, love him or hate him, is one of the most successful football managers of all time. He really had a wonderful career. He had a lot of less lovable qualities but he knew how to organize and inspire a team.

One of the attributes he wanted most in a player was that they’d never hide. They may be having a bad game, or be out of form, but they would always want the ball. They would search it out and always believe they could do something with it. Example players he picked out over the years included Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo and Steve McManaman.

In our careers we should always want the ball. There can be many reasons to hide. There are always stories we can tell ourselves about why this time doesn’t work – we are busy, it’s someone else’s problem, we’ll do it next time. However, if we can add value to the process, we should try to make a difference.

I always want the ball. Sometimes I need to push myself as we can all have the temptation to hide. One of our goals in life needs to be about making a difference. We won’t tell a story when we’re retired about the situations we avoided, but the time when we knew we could change things for the better and we did.
